ABOUT
Through her work, Lorra Ley explores the liminal space between the metaphysical and the material, where reality and dream states blend and intertwine.
Rooted in her Slavic heritage, her paintings often carry a quiet, melancholic atmosphere, shaped by longing, nostalgia, and a sense of stillness. Her practice is introspective and meditative, focused on emotional tone evoking a sense of ancient memory.
Figures, faces, and natural forms emerge within layered, often weathered surfaces, earthy – yet vibrant tones and rough textures.
Alongside painting, photography functions as a secondary strand within her practice. It serves as a more immediate observational tool, extending her sensitivity to light, environment, and fleeting visual impressions, while occasionally feeding back into her painted compositions.
Her sensibility is informed by Art Nouveau, early 20th-century fairytale illustration, and mythic storytelling traditions such as The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, and The Last Unicorn.
She is currently based in rural Moldova, where she continues to develop ongoing bodies of work across painting and photography.
